When I was working in India, I didn’t have time to cook. I thought eating out was best option and was doing that for some months .But once the health went for a toss, came to conclusion, homemade food is best. I had a cook for some months but even then had difficult time teaching her my style of cooking and taste. Eventually fired her and I was forced myself to cook between a tight schedule. Someday I had only 30 minutes in the morning to cook breakfast and lunch. Those were such hectic days.

I started to try many shortcuts to get the food on plate . Thought it will be helpful for others too and hence sharing it.

  1. Plan the menu including evening snacks for entire coming week on a weekend and make a note of it.
  2. With same note in hand, shop the groceries accordingly. So you will not be out of fruits or veggies in middle of week.
  3. Writing down all essential items ahead and following those, avoids us in shopping all the junk foods which will tempt us when we go for shopping without planning.
  4. Pre-cut the vegetables needed for next day when your relaxing or watching television in night. It wont take long, but its worth the effort. Storing vegetables in tight containers ,keeps it fresh.
  5. When cooking in the morning, keep an alarm for 15 minutes or so, so you don’t lose track of time or a small clock in kitchen will keep you speed up.
  6. Get all the item required for cooking out of fridge at once, so you can save time in grabbing each one from fridge.
  7. Some vegetables takes longer time to cook, but you don’t have time for it or place in stove. Use your microwave in such time.
  8. Steaming you veggies without water in microwave is fast and saves half the cooking time. (most of vegetables like carrot, potatoes, radish, pumpkin are loaded with water and can cook in its own moisture). Make sure you close the microwave vessel with a plate or so , so it doesn’t dry out.
  9. You can used these steamed vegetable after you pan fried the other ingredients like onion , tomatoes and just add this for the finished product.
  10. Pack you lunch and evening snacks like biscuits or fruits or yogurts along when you leave, so you don’t end up eating unhealthy items from the vending machine.
