I have tried this many times, but never used to get perfect texture of sago until recently. The key is in soaking it for longer duration and washing the sago. Once soaking is done, cooking time is only 15 mins. I like to add more vegetables to everything and since added potatoes and green peas and it was perfect combination with sago and peanuts. This dish is quick to make and usually served after fasting as they high in energy and carbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup- Sabudana (Sago)
  • 1/2 cup -roasted Peanuts chopped
  • ½ onions-finely chopped
  • 1 Potato- finely diced
  • 1 cup- frozen green peas
  • 2-3 -Green chillies chopped
  • 1tsp -Ginger grated(optional)
  • ¼ tsp- turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp- mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp- Cumin seeds
  • 1-2 tbsp- olive oil/mustard oil
  • 1 Pinch Hing (asafoetida)
  • 1-2 tsp- lime juice (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 stems – coriander leaves/curry leaves chopped (garnish)

Directions

  1. Wash and soak sabudana in water(1 cup) just enough to loosen for minimum 2 -6hrs or till it doubles/tripes in volume. Once soaked puff it with fork to loosen it.
  2. Chop the potatoes into small cubes and microwave it in microwave vessel for 2-3 mins, with the lid closed.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When the mustard seed crackle add cumin seeds, green chillies, grated ginger and curry leaves and fry for few secs before adding the chopped onions.
  4. Once the onions become translucent, add steamed potatoes and stir well.
  5. Add salt and turmeric powder and then add the  soaked sabudana and mix gently.
  6. Allow it to cook for 5-10 minutes in medium flame.( sprinkle some water if its too dry)
  7. Add the frozen peas and chopped peanuts and stir for a minute.
  8. Sprinkle some lemon juice and corianders leaves over it in the end and serve hot with chutney or pickle.

Benefits of sago

  • The health benefits of sabudana (sago) are mainly in the carbohydrates it provides . Sabudana is full of starch or carbohydrates and is great for a quick boost of energy, and hence often served in India for breaking fasts during religious festivals
  • Sabudana is extremely low in fat but also low in protein.
  • Sago gruel is also great when you’re sick because it gives you quick energy and is easy to digest.
  • According to Indian medicine, sago and rice have a cooling effect on the system, hence sago gruel is given if you have excess bile (caused by excess body heat).
